Write a poem!

A personalised poem is such a lovely thing to receive and you don’t have to have an English degree to write one.

Think about the person you want to write it for – why do you want to write them a poem? What’s special about them? How do they make you feel? Jot down a few notes, set out a few lines and there you go, a poem!

Poems don’t have to rhyme but if you’re a fan of rhyming, give it a go. For some people the words will flow more naturally than others. If you find it hard, don’t give up. Play around with structure. Even three words can convey your message.

Don’t

Give

Up

When you write away without following a particular form or structure, this is called free verse. Of course, there are various structures you could adhere to, if you wish – you could try a sonnet (14 lines following a particular rhyme scheme), a haiku (3 lines which don’t rhyme, but have 5, 7 and 5 syllables respectively), an acrostic (another one you may remember from school where the first letter of each line spells out a word), or a number of other forms, which I’ll discuss in more detail in another article.

You may find that following a form is too restrictive or you may find that the challenge of fulfilling specific structural requirements actually spurs you on. Either way, it doesn’t matter, it’s your poem, written the way you choose.

Go on, give it a try – I hope you find it fun!
